Wainscoting & Paneling DVD, the latest program in the Mastering Finish Carpentry series with Gary Katz

I remember my first wainscoting job, it was a little more than a decade ago. A small powder room, about 16 linear feet of wainscoting, a pretty easy job, so I thought. I did some head scratching, then made progress through trial and error. In the end it turned out well, but I didn't make much money on that job. I wish Gary's videos were available back then, maybe I could have turned a profit on that first wainscoting job all those years ago.

Gary's latest video in the "Mastering Finish Carpentry" series is the fundamentals of wainscoting & paneling. He brings over 30 years of experience as a finish carpenter right into your TV or computer monitor. In addition to his video series he's a contributing editor the "Fine Homebuilding" magazine, written articles for "Journal of Light Construction" and the "LBM Journal", author of two books on carpentry. Plus, he travels across nation with the "Katz Roadshow" demonstrating finish carpentry techniques, to help share his passion and knowledge of the trade. Those of you how are familiar with my site know I'm a fan of his work.

The "Wainscoting & Paneling" is the seventh program in the series. The earlier programs covered mastering the miter saw, installing casing and baseboard and conquering crown molding. Gary tackles the newest program with the same comprehensive approach, three disc set with more than six hours, the fundamentals are thoroughly covered. Some of the topics discussed are measuring and layout techniques, using the newest laser measuring tools and the proper way to use a calculator to layout for your panels. Solving the problems you can run into with terminating wainscoting and baseboard to casing. Frame and panel construction with pocket screws and the Festool Domino. How to design and build corners that will stand up to seasonal wood movement. Scribing, cutting, and fitting frames and chair rail. Gary talks about designing different styles to fit any home. He also gives us a closer look at some of the tools he uses, lasers, tape measures, table saw and some tools from Festool.

What I really like about this program is that there is very little editing, Gary shows virtually the entire process of design, layout, construction and installation. You actually get to see all of the details and all of Gary's tricks. Plus his methods are easy to understand. This DVD set is for the serious "Do It Yourself" guys or the professional carpenter. I think anyone no matter what your experience level is can learn something from this program, I know I have. Check out a few clips from Gary's new DVD here.
